Anupam Kher Calls ‘The Bengal Files’ Shocking and Disturbing After Theatre Screening

🎬 Veteran actor Anupam Kher, who plays Mahatma Gandhi in Vivek Agnihotri’s ‘The Bengal Files’, recently shared his emotional response after watching the film in theatres. The actor described the film as “Shocking, Saddening, Emotionally Disturbing, and at places Numbing.”
Kher posted about his experience on social media, revealing that he watched the film in a theatre with 80% occupancy, where audiences were visibly moved, some even breaking into tears while remembering the victims of the riots before partition. He praised the film’s acting, sets, cinematography, costumes, and background music, but reserved his highest praise for Vivek Agnihotri, calling him the true captain of the ship.
‘The Bengal Files’, released on September 5, 2025, portrays the horrific events of Direct Action Day and the Noakhali riots, depicting them as genocide and questioning their absence from mainstream history. However, the film has not been released in West Bengal after theatre owners refused to screen it, leading to what producers are calling an “unofficial ban.”
The controversy has sparked nationwide discussion, with producer Pallavi Joshi appealing to President Droupadi Murmu and the IMPPA urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene.
With its powerful storytelling and bold take on historical events, ‘The Bengal Files’ is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about films of 2025.
